Central Pizza Celebrates 50 Years in Business

The ancient Greeks believed the course of human life is spun, measured out and cut by the Fates. Perhaps it was the Fates who guided Christos Konstantakis and his family from Greece to Montreal and, ultimately, to Southbridge, MA more than 50 years ago.

In 1965, Christos and his wife Irene settled in Southbridge where his uncle Kosta Nikolla and brother-in-law Evangelous (Gil) Chrisikos lived and operated a fruit store on Central St. At twenty-five years of age and with some restaurant experience, Christos was eager to enter into a business relationship with his family. After some discussion and a handshake, Gil and Kosta invited him to start Central Pizza at 55 Central Street. And now, fifty years later, Central Pizza is still going strong under the stewardship of the second generation, including ongoing support and loyalty from members of the original family as well as key employees who have contributed to the successful transition between generations.

Since opening its doors in March of 1967, the family has touched the lives of thousands. On almost any given day when you venture into Central Pizza, conversations will often turn to the man whose spirit lives on at 55 Central Street. Christos always had some wisdom to impart. His son Kyriakos, “KK,” smiles when recalling some “‘Christos moments.’ My father’s words were few, but powerful. He challenged us to think, to question, to not rest on our laurels.”

For a business to survive and thrive for fifty years takes dedication and a commitment to quality. The restaurant business is tough, yet Central Pizza has been able to maintain loyal customers, even when competitors opened a pizza shop across the street, by keeping the quality consistently good and the prices affordable.

To celebrate the gift of 50 years in business the community has bestowed, Central Pizza is offering its customers a small cheese pizza for the 1967 price ninety-five cents (with purchase of any large one-topping pizza or more) through December 24.

“While we’ve kept many of the menu items and recipes people came to know and love, we’ve expanded the menu to include interests for newer generations,” said the Konstantakis family. “Our hope is that the next generation of people keeps our family’s legacy alive for another fifty years.”

“What you leave behind is not what is engraved in stone monuments, but what is woven into the lives of others,” wrote the ancient Greek statesman Pericles. Although these words were written 2,500 years ago, they are truly befitting the legacy of Evangelous (Gil) Chrisikos, Kosta Nikolla, and Christos Konstantakis.
